Marketing: importance of audience

Is it important to select a target audience and market?

One of the principles on which marketing works is that it is not effective unless you choose whom it is aimed at. The idea of marketing is selling stuff to people in order to satisfy their needs, and since it is not possible to do this for all people on Earth, you need to choose a target group whose concerns and needs you will be serving, and to forget about the rest (at least until the moment you choose to expand your business). By narrowing your scope down to a relatively small group of people, you will be able to learn about them better: figure out what bothers and interests them, what their problems are, what they want, and so on, and thus be able to press these “buttons” when promoting and selling your product.
