Before 1906, specific regulations on the ethical use of human subjects were non-existent. The Nuremberg code came as a result of the reported trial regarding prisoners used in conducting research. The Nuremberg code was established in 1948 and it explains the voluntary consent of an individual to be used in research as absolutely essential. A petition filed against 23 German physicians on the use of thousands of prisoners in conducting a variety of researches without the consent of these prisoners facilitated the establishment of the Nuremberg Code. Most of the prisoners died and many of them were made crippled.
