Going by the word “poly” meaning “many” or “numerous”, a polyatomic ion refers to an ion that is made up of at least two atoms. The atoms on a polyatomic ion are most often bound by covalent bonds, and based on the connection or bond formed between two ions, polyatomic ions could either be positively charged or negatively charged.

A good example of a polyatomic ion is phosphate ion (PO43).
