Cohesion is the distinct ability of like molecules to attract. The cohesive property of water is the highest of all non-metallic liquid. The polarity of hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water makes them easily attracted to one another. Each water molecule is capable of forming four hydrogen bonds with neighboring molecules. This high cohesive property of water produces surface tension which supports floatation of light object without sinking. Therefore, the cohesive property of water is as a result of the hydrogen bonds between oxygen atom of one water molecule, and a hydrogen atom of another water molecule.
