A

Answer: A. a spy for the English Catholics

Christopher Marlowe was an English playwright, translator, and poet during the Elizabeth era. Marlowe is considered among many scholars as the foremost dramatist of this time just before his mysterious death. He is also believed to have greatly influenced Shakespeare who got baptized in the same year as Marlowe and also succeeded him to be an important Elizabethan playwright.

Marlowe was very intelligent and with this, he won a series of scholarships which propelled his study in the King’s School right in Canterbury and then in Cambridge University. Queen Elizabeth I, the then Queen of England, restored Protestantism as the country’s official religion and she began spying on the Roman Catholics. She had spies helping her do her work and it is rumored that Marlowe was one of the spies working for her. The English Catholic, in particular, are pioneers of this and Marlowe worked as a spy for them.
