Los Angeles was initially a town meant to provide food for Southern California. During the American-Mexican war, the United States took control of California and Los Angeles was neglected. In the 1850s, less than 2000 people stayed in the town and roughly 8,329 occupied the LA county overall of which the majority spoke Spanish. The growth of Los Angeles however took off in the 1880s on two main grounds; the activities of promoters and a new railroad. With this, Los Angeles became a fruitful American city and subsequently, schools, city halls, and newspapers were established. Real estate boom started and in 1897 LA got its major port in San Pedro. So many businesses started and the growth of Los Angeles stayed consistent into the following decades. LA later became a leading economic, cultural, and political center of California and then the second largest city in America.
